Transparency International Pakistan Concludes Youth Climate Education & Fellowship Program 2024 with Innovation Challenge
<\/strong>Venue: Shaikh Ayaz University, Shikarpur

Transparency International (TI) Pakistan successfully concluded its Youth Climate Education & Fellowship Program 2024 with a vibrant closing ceremony and the Youth Climate Governance Innovation Challenge at Shaikh Ayaz University, Shikarpur (SAUS). The event celebrated the innovative ideas and leadership of young climate advocates and was attended by a representative from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Sindh, university faculty, 100 students\u2014including the 30 fellows\u2014and local media.<\/p>

The collaborative initiative between TI Pakistan and SAUS started in May 2024. The year-long fellowship was designed to enhance students’ capacity to understand and address climate change through three key objectives: educational enhancement, practical engagement, and policy and advocacy.<\/p>

30 fellows were selected from diverse departments such as Computer Science, Business Administration, Information Technology, and Literature. Over past 17 months, TI Pakistan and SAUS conducted five comprehensive sessions. These modules covered critical topics including climate governance, the climate finance landscape in Sindh and Pakistan, the role of social media, carbon markets governance, social accountability, right to information laws, and the role of youth in climate action and policy advocacy.<\/p>

The closing ceremony commenced with participant registration and the recitation of the Holy Quran. Dr. Bakhtiar Ahmed, Registrar of SAUS and Focal Person for the program, extended his gratitude to TI Pakistan. He highlighted the program’s role as a vital platform for inspiring youth to engage in shaping climate policies, developing sustainable solutions, and advancing climate education in higher learning institutions.<\/p>

Ms. Fariha Fatima, Program Associate at TI Pakistan, presented an insightful overview of the fellowship. She emphasized its core objectives and key milestones, sharing success stories and reflections that demonstrated how the program enhanced the fellows’ understanding of climate issues and strengthened their capacity to advocate for transparency and good governance.<\/p>

The highlight of the ceremony was the Climate Governance Innovation Challenge, which provided a platform for the fellows to showcase their year-long learning. The fellows formed groups to develop and present innovative ideas, resulting in seven presentations evaluated by a distinguished panel of judges:<\/p>

    The presentations covered a wide range of topics, including carbon markets, climate impacts in Sindh, data monitoring, climate-resilient infrastructure, transparency in climate finance, youth leadership, and preventing the misuse of climate funds. They were evaluated based on originality, relevance, feasibility, impact potential, clarity, and audience engagement.<\/p>

    Four outstanding projects were selected as winners for their creative and practical approaches to climate governance:<\/p>

    • Carbon Emission Tracker:<\/strong>A tool to monitor and reduce carbon emissions.<\/li>
    • Digital and Smart Infrastructure for Disaster Prediction and Management:<\/strong>Leveraging technology to enhance disaster preparedness.<\/li>
    • Eco Track:<\/strong>A platform to track climate funds and ensure transparency.<\/li>
    • Youth-Led Nature-Based Solutions for Greener Cities:<\/strong>Initiatives promoting sustainable urban development through youth engagement.<\/li><\/ul>

      The winning team and three runner-up teams were awarded cash prizes and certificates.<\/p>

      Dr. Mulazim Ali Khokhar appreciated the practical, research-based solutions and encouraged the fellows to develop their ideas into actionable projects. Dr. Gul Ameer Sumbal emphasized the vital role of youth and suggested that the EPA could facilitate industry visits for practical exposure. Ms. Nasreen Memon encouraged the fellows to continue advocating for transparency and accountability, while Dr. Saqib Ahmed Mahar thanked TI Pakistan for providing a platform to showcase academic potential in climate action.<\/p>

      In his closing remarks, Dr. Mehmood-ul-Hassan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, highlighted the urgent need to address climate change in Sindh and applauded the fellows for their innovative ideas aimed at building sustainable communities. He thanked TI Pakistan for the support and collaboration under the fellowship programs.<\/p>

      To conclude the event, certificates were awarded to the 30 youth climate fellows in recognition of their active participation, commitment throughout the year-long program, and their innovative contributions to climate governance and advocacy.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t
