Anti-Corruption Coalition Meeting - Right to Information Laws in Balochistan

April 14, 2019

Transparency International Pakistan in collaboration with Sabawoon for Peace & Sustainable Development (SPSD) organized a meeting in Quetta with other civil society organizations. The purpose was to discuss the conditions of right to information laws in the province. The civil society organizations demanded from legislatures to pass from provincial assembly new Right to Information Law as soon as possible to ensure citizens’ access to public information. The participants regretted that Freedom of Information (FOI) 2005 law does not fulfill citizens’ demand and requirements. TI Pakistan representative Ashfaque Ahmed introduced TI Pakistan’s mission, its projects and advocacy campaigns. He said that all the three provinces including the Federal Government have passed effective RTI laws however, Balochistan is behind in the legislative process. The RTI laws should be strong enough under a competent information commission. Participants recognized the role of civil society to bring awareness among the masses about such laws which can reduce corruption. In the end, the organizers thanked the participants who despite a bad weather in the city, came in and joined this important discussion.
