Meeting with District Election Commission Vehari

On 30th March 2017, Transparency International Pakistan representative met with District Election Commission (EC) Officer Vehari. The meeting was organized by Sudhar Development Organization (SDO). The objective of the meeting was to know ECP efforts for brining transparency in the electoral process and to know their complaint management system if any exist there. Mr. Aamir Javeed who is the District Election Officer, district Vehari welcomed TI Pakistan representative to the office. The other members of the delegation visited his office included Ms. Saima Batool, SDO’s President and a local journalist Mr. Rashid Aziz. The District Election Officer told about the procedure of how a particular constituency is developed and informed that all the maps about the constituencies are uploaded on the ECP website. To bring more transparency, ECP is going to introduce geographic information system (GIS) based mapping of all polling stations in the country in time for the next general elections. This will allow voters to use mapping software accessible through the ECP website to get walking or driving directions to their polling stations. Mr Aamir Javeed gave a demo how the system works. To increase the voter turn over, Mr. Aamir Javeed briefed about another initiative taken by the ECP which is called District Voter Education Commission (DVEC). The objective of the commission is to education the voters, particularly the women, to participate in the election process. They are also connected with NADRA and helping citizens to acquire CNIC before the elections. On the complaint management system, the District Election Commission officer told that they have three forms (i.e. A, B and C) which can be used by a citizen in case of any complaint regarding changing his/her constituency, updating his record, or deleting a vote. He also informed the complete redressal procedure if a complaint is lodged by any citizen. The meeting lasted for 45 minutes.
